if you could imagine the two boys in the picture pulling you where they wanted to go all the time, it would be unbearable and it was, until they learned to calm down and walk with a loose leash and with me one of them can now walk off leash and has a good recall. still working on the other mischief maker. Their owners are now working on long lining to get good recall before allowing them to run free, sensible owners. Everything takes time as there are no quick fixes to positive reinforcement training .
The dog training sessions available may vary,
Where dogs problems vary, the pricing will do as well. The prices set out are for basic training problems fall in to certain category. We can also sort training programs to suit specific problems . What ever the issue we should be able to help owners with their dogs progress and acheive well mannered and well behaved dogs. By looking below you should be able to work out the package you require or contact us and we will let you know the best way forwards.
Dog training basics are what they need to know to keep them safe. They should know how to "Sit", "Stay", "Leave it", "No", "drop", "place", "focus". All these commands should be used from day one of picking up your puppy. Just using these few commands will set your puppy up for success and make learning easier for them. These commands create calmness and encourage them to look up to you for guidance. Toilet training is essential as puppies don't no they cant just go to the toilet anywhere and should never have their noses rubbed in their mess ever as that won't teach them anything just scare them, you just remove them to where they can go.
Loose leash walking is a must as no one wants to be dragged around by there dog. It can take the fun out of taking your dog out and they wont get taken to all the nice places you go in the summer time. It's not much fun for the dog either because you've not shown them the right way to walk they are pulling you by their neck which I'm sure they don't enjoy. Once a dog is shown how to walk by your side everyone can enjoy fun times out. Recall is down to leash work and also should be taught as this is a must for their safety as well. No dog should be off leash unless recall trained. A dog with no recall training is a danger to other dogs ,children and cars and its self.
Resource guarding is caused by the dog feeling he/she need to guard what is theirs as a means of survival, be it food or toys or even their owners, they are protecting their resources. When your dog is a puppy things may have been removed from them and not returned so when they get the next thing they enjoy their going to protect it a bit more thinking it wont be returned. One way around this is when you take something from your puppy return it to then and practice it regularly. Try hand feeding if you feel your puppy is protecting the food bowl, they realize you are not steeling their food or possessions.
All dogs will have something that could turn into an issue if not doubt with early on. Dogs that don't have such a good start in life or been miss-treated need to be handled slightly differently. I take my hat off to anyone who is prepare to take on a dogs with issues as it can be hard work but so rewarding to have a dog except you after a bad start. Some problem behaviours can simply be caused by reinforcing the wrong behaviour to start with, getting your timing wrong when rewarding a behaviour. Its not always the dog we look at, its how you've taught certain things and when you've rewarded the dog. Leash reactive and reactive dogs need behaviour training.
All the dogs i work with, I assess and not just go on what someone else has said the dog may have, often it something other than what the owner thinks or has been told . Sometimes it due to the owners miss understanding of dogs body language or someone else had a simular problem with their dog and they were told to do this. Well I like to see the problem for myself and watch how the owners are trying to deal with the issue. Once I've seen how the dog acts to what the owners are doing I can then set a plan into motion and tell the owners normally where they are going wrong and help them to understand why they are going wrong and to why the dog isn't understanding them. A lot of dog problems are more to do with the owners than they are the dogs. Timing to when you are giving a correction or treat can sometimes reward the wrong behaviour so just getting that right will make such a difference to start with. Not all problems can be sorted so easily but once we know the problem there's always way to help so don't give up on them as dogs just want to please you and be apart of a family.
Dogs are what we make them just like children they need to learn manners and their place in the family, saying that you don't want to treat them like a baby as 1 year to a human is like they say 7 years to a dog, so by 2 years you got a stroppy teenager that doesn't want to listen to anything you got to say. Really you do need to teach then sooner than later, but i know you can teach an old dog new tricks, so what ever the age we can help them develop still so don't just give up and say you will just have to put up with it when you don't. I'm more than happy to help you move forwards and bring out the good in your dog and make your journey together one you will always remember for all the good times you will have over the years you have with them.
